Still looking Steve.  I've looked through 100's of old photos of family.  But, I think I know where they are at.  In a filing cabinet in my dad's enclosure.   The problem is, getting to the filing cabinet with over 500 or more BMX old school trophies LOL.  I'll rumage through the trophies and take photos.  I believe I also have boxes of brand new Ame grips, a box of brand new shimano parts, zeronine plates, black bull-eye hubs laced with old school araya ( Darrell Young style ), origianl plates, and other items.

WOW,David Wallis.....his father Tom continued on as track operator with Yearround BMX and then changed the name to Sunol BMX several years later .
We started at the track in 1985 or 86... First national was at the Cow Palace in San Francisco..

I remember Alex after we were done with bmx (well in my case I am never done!) doing smokey burnouts in his Olds Cutles at car shows in Sac! I think your mystery man was Gene Dammron? He ran Moby Dick Bike Shop when it was the BADDEST Bike Shop team in the USA back in the late 80's

Great pictures!!!! I still can't get over the size of those number plates.They are like pizza boxes LOL  Did you guys have to use 5 inch numbers?? Why did plates get sooo big in the '80s? They seemed to be getting smaller/lighter in the '70s. I remember a guy named Larry Ruiz, whose dad drilled his number plate like a million times to make it more aero-dynamic and lighter. Seemed at the time that would be the way of the future. Maybe you guys had the same scoring ladies in the '80s that we had in the '70s ( only 10 years older )

That bro in front with the "1" on the plate inspired me to get into BMX when I turned twelve. I started working at shops when I was (13X?)  errr...ummm... so I could afford more than a Used department  store bike  and skateboard elbow pads. I'd like to get a hold of those guys.  I used to hang out with Mike a lot back in the old days.  Joe was always really nice.
 
Yeah. I had some bikes stolen, as well.  I had a Patterson I had built up that I got from Scott Fifield (I still talk to Scott) that was stolen.  Since I didn't buy the bike (it was a factory frame from Patterson with no sales recipt), I couldn't get the bike back because I couldn't prove to the police that it was mine, even though I knew who stole it.  The bike was sold for parts and the frame was left on the train tracks, or so I heard.
 
I'm sure we all have several stolen bike stories. :(

I remember that incident about the Wadley's.  I think Greg Liggins was with them as well. 
 
I have all my number plates and afew newark schwinn jersey's.  I still have the factory uniform from Schwinn.  The classic schwinn sting bmx bike that schwinn gave to me when I left the team was stolen out of my dad's garage back in 88. 
 
Speaking of Mike Discipulo, I talk to Joe Discipulo almost every week.  It was Mike's birthday last week and this was the photo we framed for him ( thanks to Johnny Johnson ).

Oh yeah!  I remember the green chevy.  Also, do you remember when the Wadley family was driving to a race (I can't remember which one) and their bikes fell off the top of their car and they didn't notice?  The amzing thing was they drove back and found the bikes and they were ok... just a bit scratched.
 
I remember going to Chandler for the winter nationals and thinking the weather was decent for February... Until the sun went down.  We camped in a tent or something and I froze my ass off.  I think I even caught a cold. 
 
Do you guys have anything left from the old days?  All I have are my Newark Schwinn jerseys (2, I think), my Moby Dick bike shop jersey and some number plates.  I wish I still had a Discipulo plate that Mike used to make.  I gotta contact Mike. 
 
Oh and I may have an F&M Cycle City jersey.
 
 It's starting to come back to me.

Jasen:  The Wadley's drove up in that Green chevy truck or the red mazda 626.  We drove up in the blue GNC truck with the white rear camper shell where my dad would hook-up the TV and Mike Salido would watch football games on sunday's at the track.  Didn't you ride with us to Chandler Az for the winternats ( You, me, Shannon, Johnny, and my uncle Jessie ) ???  After the winter nats, we stayed in the Valley ( North Hollywood ) and raced at Devonshire Downs for the double points race ???

That's Ernie Gallardo Sr. Dropping the gate....once in a while they had Andy Mattos dropping the gate but he was usually the one announcing and cracking gut bustin jokes while we were all racing.

So I'm looking at the pictures and I think I have the names of the riders thanks to my buddy Alex Damron....he said (and now that I look at the picture it makes sense) the left hand MD rider is Ernie Gallardo Jr. and far right is John Vendetti....

Serafin,
Those were the days when a local race had 45-60 motos and a double point race had over 100 motos! These were also the days when our locals with big names still raced local venues and we still had semi's at Orion Park in the 17 over Expert Class!

Hey Adam.  I remember you.  There was only one Adam I knew that raced for Moby Dick back in the day.  I also remember Ansel Lopez waaaay back in the day.  I raced for Newark Schwinn when you raced for MD.  I was at Santa Clara hanging out with Steve one evening and I saw someone on the gate with an old school Moby Dick uniform.  I said to Steve, " Hey Steve, is that what I think it is ??? A moby dick bike shop uniform ??? So the picture above at the starting gate has two of my Moby Dick Bike Shop team members in the red white and blue jerseys (you've seen Zach wear my jersey on a few occasions). OMG !!  I remember treeview in Hayward.  Ernest sounds familiar.  My father took photos of me, Tony Harmon, and Shannon Kahahane when we went there to ride one afternoon after a race.  I need to find those pics as well. 
 
Matt:  Nice avitar !!  Yeah, BMX racing back in the day were my roots.  I think the only person that have more stories and photos than me is Johnny Johnson ( J.J.) from down south in San Diego when he raced with the Kings ( Eddy and Mikey ), Lee Medlin, and others.  I got a hold of Eddy King and he showed me a ton of his photos back in the day.  Him and Mikey have loads of photos of them racing back in the day.

you really need to figure out how to package / present this important part of our sport's history to a wider audience.

back to topic- kid's today! haha... BITD my folks knew i was either at one of the vacant lots on my bike or 2 blocks down at the beach surfing. we kids were brown as coconuts from the sun, and slept deeply at night  because we burned off so much energy during the day. during the summer my mom forbid us to watch daytime TV... we had to be outside from 10 am to 5 pm, lunch exempted.

as parents it is up to us to see that our kids get outside, and do something active.

Steve is exactly right.  We didn't have internet access and buying a atari 1300, coleco, or intellivision were bank back in the day.  The only thing I did when I was a kid was go to school, ride, and race bmx.  Also, the racing was alot different back in the day.  EVERYBODY pedeled to the finish including the guy in last place.  I remember when I turned expert (14 expert ); making the main was a battle in itself.  You really had to work hard because all the guys I raced were national champions, state champions, NBA or UBR champs.  Our 14x main looked like this at the locals ( Ritchie Anderson, Jon Anderson, Vern Lathan, Mike Salido, Shannon Kahahane, Greg Liggins, Mike Dicipolo, Bob Coover, Terry Tenentt, Roy David, Andy Giavanni, and many many more..... ).  It was alot harder back in the day.

There were large numbers of BMX racers because kids played outside...What happened to all those kids,they didn't go away,think of 2 VERY IMPORTANT things kids have now that they didn't have 10 years ago..and they both are used INSIDE the house... Video games and Computers now use up large amounts of peoples time that used to be used outdoors.Competition for time and energy,there is just so much more a child can do with their time..Promotion of the BMX sport keeps riders involved.
Everybody bring a friend to the races.. Get them involved..Its as easy as that.

How strange it must seem then to see such low numbers now. I would guess that you are use to it. But, 50 -60 motos that is what we see at our state races now. The level of competion must have been higher and making mains meant something then. Not just hanging on till the third moto but racing to get a spot in the mains.
What would it take to bring back those numbers. Hmmm

Brotha Manny.  I remember seeing numbers go all the way up to 1200 in Cal-04 back in the day.  Also, when we use to race at Fremont BMX ( Baylands ) back in 80-81, we had almost 50-60 motos on a regular race day.  Those were the days........

jt89366:  That's my dad in those pictures with the yellow jacket.  He was one of the track officials at the original Fremont BMX ( Fremont, Cal ) and Sunol BMX back in the day.

I hate to be a nit picker, but this is probably '82. I am pretty sure Sunol did not open until the 1982 spring nationals. It was the relocated Fremont track after they got kicked out of Baylands. BROTHA SHANNON !!!!!  Dude, i've been trying to locate ya brah !!  I remember all those races you mention, especially the 80's winter nats at Chandler Arizona.  I think before we all got split-up, weren't you suppose to race for Robinson, A. Wadley racing for Jag, and me for Schwinn.  I got a hold of the Dicipolo's, Harmon, and Wadley.  Do you still see Jason Martinez around ???  Hit me up at mugen161@hotmail.com so that we can touch base.  My father is heavyly into golf and is playin a tournament tommorrow.  Hit me up so we can catch up.

  13x    i think we had way over 60 in that class for that race.

semi hole shot 1st
Lane one inside, Kelly Mcdougle, me, lane 3 Richie Anderson and all the best at that age group.  Had all ready beat Richie and Kelly in early rounds.  Yes hole shot. my team at that time Newark Schwinn had lots of factory teams looking at all of our team.  what a dream hole shot Kelly gone no Richie after first corner.  going into turn two i get center punched we know who it is, at that time this was one of his best moves lots of other racers will concur.  Yes it was Richie, I am on the ground hit the water gun. water up in the air all around me.  It was great I can see that weekend like it was yesterday.  By far Richie was the best.  Love all the old stuff yes i am an old guy.  Tony H gave me my first skateboard,dog town. broke my leg racing  Lancaster triple points race. 1st corner in main   put foot down to brace my self broke leg in half tib, fib dislocated ankle two cast two surgery over next six months) came back a skater.  Of course if i could change it i would. spent many weekends with Regelo S great person and great family.  Not many pics Fremont raceway, Watson Park, Orion Park, Hellyer Park,  Atwater,  Merced to old school.

No prob. Brian.  That was kewl that you and Van went to school together back in the day.  Van Argerious held the number 1 plate in Cal-4 back in the early-mid 80's back to back years.  And, Van beat alot of the guys back then that were chasing points.  To name afew, Ritchie Anderson, Jon, Anderson, Mike Salido, Sean Ho, Roy David, Stevie Hutchinson, Mark Perez, Tony Harmon, Bodie Cook, etc....... There were alot of NorCal racers that were really fast in Cal-4 back in the day.  From what I remember, Cal-4 was probably one of the harder districts to finish in the top 10 along with Cal 1,2,and 6.  Van was always a person I always looked up to just because he was so kewl to everyone. 
 
Ever heard of the race between Van and Pete Loncaravich ???  This happened at the Dia-Comp nationals in Devenshire, Northridge, Ca.  It was the semi's in 16 expert and they were taking 4 out of 8 racers to the mains.  Van and Pete got tangled up in the first corner and took the whole pack down.  Pete grapped Van's bike and vice versa.  Pete ended up finishing the race and qualified to the main with Van's Bike.  Pete went up to the official and told him that this isn't his bike.  I don't know what happened after that.  The officials didn't know what to do, so they ran a re-race between Van and Pete ONLY.  The problem was that both Pete and Van had number one plates and both were sponosred by Diamond Back.  Both of their bikes looked IDENTICAL right down to the gold factory emblems that the team riders had.  Van was co-sponsored by Diamond Back while Pete was full sponsored.  Pete Loncaravich ended up winning.  My father took a photo of the race, but im still trying to locate it at my parents home.   Here's two photos of Van.  One at Chandler Az. ( white helmet / blue and white uniform ) #1 and Lancaster before he got picked up from Odyessy.

Wow, Van Argerious , That's a name I haven't heard in 20 years. Van & I went to school together & we use to race Baylands & the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

i'm the dorky one in in glasses. note wafflestomper boots and ubiquitous hole in knee of jeans.  my buddy dave is running a littlejohn monshock. man he could boost MAJOR air on that thing. when he got his motmags that bike was a dream to ride on downhill courses- remember merritt college?

spring 1983- winchester VA i think.


thank goodness for sealed bearings... would they even run a race in such conditions these days?

howard county, MD- winter of 1983


18 and over open main. i'm closest to the camera. the allens ran a great outdoor track at the howard county fairgrounds, and built indoor dirt tracks there for the winter season. man "the barn" was cold! silk longjohns were the key- anything else was too bulky.

i'm the dorky one in glasses. i was riding for rockville BMX at this point. that's my buddy john with a slight lead. he rode for redline and they had some reps at the race. i helped him look good by taking out that other guy in the next corner, then john and i pantomimed an epic struggle with him just edging me at the line, LOL!

fall 1983- waterholes also went the way of real downhill tracks i guess.

Here's a video clip I found on BMX Action.  They were interviewing Jason Jenson and Greg Liggins at Fremont BMX.  Im #26 behind Liggins during both of his apperances.  You can see me with a trophy in my hand.  I finished 2nd behind Greg.
 
Also, there's a part when they show Jason Jenson in the lead and Jenson gets SWOOPED by Anthony Wadley in the last turn !!!!!!!  Shawna Cordora was also featured.  She also raced for my father's team ( Newark Schwinn ) back in the day.  Very kewl footage !!!!

No problem Matt.  I have a bunch more ( LumberJack Nationals in Portland Oregan, The spring nationals at the San Francisco Cow Palace, afew from Devenshire Northridge at the Dia-Comp nationals where Charlie Williams got recognized, and alot more ).

Anybody knows who this is ?  He still races and is vet pro.

Here is a small sample of BMX racing back in the day.  Most of the photos were taken from 79-89 ( the years I raced ).  Enjoy.
 
Frank Post at the winter nats in Chandler, Az.  Frank Post lives around the corner from me.
 
Brian Torres ( 9 expert ) racing for Newark Schwinn.
 
Jerry Aroyo jumping over Factory Skyway Pilot Rick Palmer at Red Devil.  I just spoke to Jerry last night and he's picking up a redline today.  He might be racing again. He'll be in the 46-50 cruiser class.
